About
Alava Bay Cabin offers a secluded wilderness retreat on Revillagigedo Island, backed by old-growth rainforest with a rocky beach nearby. Built in 1974, this 12x14-foot pan-abode style cabin features two single bunks and two double bunks, a wood-burning stove for heat, a table with benches, and a front deck overlooking Alava Bay. A mooring buoy is available on a first-come, first-served basis. The surrounding landscape of gentle slopes and dense forest is home to black and brown bears, wolves, Sitka black-tailed deer, bald eagles, and various marine mammals including orcas and humpback whales. Saltwater fishing, sightseeing, kayaking, hiking, hunting, and beachcombing are popular activities. Navigation can be challenging due to tides, merging currents, and exposure to open ocean waters. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing sleeping bags, food, cookware, lanterns, toilet paper, garbage bags, fire extinguisher, and their own firewood and drinking water. Water from nearby creeks requires treatment. Helicopter access is prohibited in this designated Wilderness area.
Directions
Located 20 air miles southeast of Ketchikan on Revillagigedo Island in Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness. Accessible by floatplane, boat, or kayak only. A mooring buoy is available. Navigation is challenging due to tides, merging currents, and open ocean exposure. Refer to USGS Ketchikan A-4 and check local tide charts in advance.
