About
Checats Lake Cabin sits on a small knoll at the outlet of Upper Checats Lake near Checats Creek, within the Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness. This 12x12 pan-abode cabin features two single bunks and two double bunks, accommodating up to six people, along with a table, benches, wood stove, and outhouse. The cabin includes a skylight and comes with basic tools like a splitting maul and broom. A 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars is provided for exploring the lake. The surrounding area is heavily forested with steep, rocky cliff faces visible on three sides of the lake. Fishing is rated as very good for rainbow trout up to 24 inches. Hunting is available with proper permits for mountain goat, Sitka black-tailed deer, black bear, and brown bear. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, as black and brown bears, deer, and mountain goats are common in the area. This is an extremely remote location requiring complete self-sufficiency. Guests must bring their own water supply (or treat water from the nearby creek), sleeping bags, sleeping pads, cookware, food, toilet paper, and all other necessities. The cabin is located in designated Wilderness, so helicopter access is illegal. Floatplane is the only access method, approximately 45 air miles from Ketchikan.
Directions
Located approximately 45 air miles northeast of Ketchikan on the mainland south of Rudyerd Bay. Accessible by floatplane only. In fall, winter, and early spring, the cabin may be inaccessible due to frozen lake surface. The trail to Lower Checats Lake does NOT provide cabin access. Helicopter access is illegal in this designated Wilderness area. Refer to USGS topographic map Ketchikan B-3.
