Checats Lake Cabin
The cabin is currently closed. While it nominally operates year-round, float plane access may be limited during fall, winter, and early spring due to frozen lake conditions. About
Checats Lake Cabin offers a secluded wilderness experience in the heart of Misty Fiords National Monument Wilderness. The rustic 12x12 pan-abode cabin sits on a scenic knoll overlooking Upper Checats Lake near Checats Creek, surrounded by steep cliff faces on three sides and dense temperate rainforest. The cabin accommodates up to six guests with two single and two double bunks, and is equipped with a wood stove, cooking counter, table with benches, shelves, and basic tools including an axe and splitting wedges. A 14-foot aluminum skiff with oars is provided for lake exploration and fishing. Rainbow trout fishing is rated very good, with fish reaching up to 24 inches. Hunting opportunities for mountain goat, Sitka black-tailed deer, and both black and brown bears are available with proper permits. Bears are common in the area, so proper food storage and bear awareness are essential. Guests must be fully self-sufficient. There is no potable water, electricity, or cell service. Water can be obtained from the nearby creek but must be treated. All trash must be packed out. Access is by float plane only; helicopter access is prohibited in this designated Wilderness area. During fall, winter, and early spring, the lake surface may freeze, preventing float plane landings.
Directions
