About

Manzanita Bay Shelter sits within the spectacular Misty Fiords National Monument Wilderness on Revillagigedo Island in Southeast Alaska. This three-sided structure was recently rebuilt after being destroyed by a windstorm in 2010, providing backcountry travelers with basic protection from the region's frequent rain. The shelter is situated approximately 28 air miles northeast of Ketchikan and is accessible only by floatplane or boat. Misty Fiords is renowned for its dramatic scenery including steep granite cliffs, glacially-carved valleys, and dense rainforests. Wildlife viewing opportunities include potential sightings of bears, mountain goats, killer whales, and porpoises. This is a primitive wilderness facility with no potable water, restrooms, or other amenities. Visitors must be fully self-sufficient, bringing all water, supplies, and packing out all trash. The shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis consistent with other wilderness shelters in the Tongass National Forest.
