Manzanita Bay Shelter

Open — Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations required or accepted. Accessible only by floatplane or boat.

About

Manzanita Bay Shelter sits within the pristine Misty Fiords National Monument Wilderness, approximately 28 air miles northeast of Ketchikan on Revillagigedo Island. This three-sided Adirondack-style shelter was recently rebuilt after a windstorm destroyed the original structure in 2010. The shelter provides basic protection from Southeast Alaska's frequent rainfall but requires visitors to be fully self-sufficient. Accessible only by floatplane or boat, this remote shelter offers a true wilderness experience in one of North America's largest intact coastal temperate rainforests. The surrounding area features dramatic fjords, waterfalls, and opportunities to observe wildlife including black bears, deer, mountain goats, and bald eagles. No potable water is available at the shelter, so visitors must treat water from natural sources or bring their own supply. As part of a designated wilderness area, the shelter operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. The free shelter is maintained by the Tongass National Forest and experiences light use due to its remote location and access requirements. Visitors should be prepared for wilderness camping conditions and practice Leave No Trace principles in this pristine environment.
