About
Punchbowl Lake Shelter Site is a remote three-sided shelter located at the terminus of the Punchbowl Lake trail within the Misty Fjords National Monument Wilderness. The shelter sits in one of the monument's most spectacular settings, surrounded by towering granite cliffs, glacially-carved valleys, and lush temperate rainforest. This area is known for its dramatic scenery and diverse wildlife, making it a popular destination for experienced wilderness travelers. Access requires boat or floatplane transportation to Punchbowl Cove, located near the mouth of Rudyerd Bay off the Behm Canal. A mooring buoy is available in the cove. From the trailhead, hikers follow the Punchbowl Lake trail, which includes a spur to a breathtaking waterfall overlook at the halfway point. The shelter is available first-come, first-served with no reservations or fees. Campers must be prepared for remote wilderness conditions. No potable water is available; visitors must treat lake water or bring their own. The site includes two vault toilets. Weather in the area is typically wet with frequent rain and mist, and visitors should plan for cool temperatures even in summer. This is bear country, and proper food storage is essential.
