Canyon Campground is a Custer Gallatin National Forest campground located in Yankee Jim Canyon along US Highway 89, just 15 miles north of Gardiner, Montana. This primitive campground features 17 first-come, first-served campsites naturally separated by boulders and trees, with the Yellowstone River located across the highway. The campground provides a back-to-basics camping experience with vault toilets, fire rings, tables, and accessible food storage boxes, but no potable water, trash service, or firewood. The campground is best suited for tents and smaller RVs, as the narrow campground roads cannot accommodate vehicles longer than 48 feet. Individual parking spurs average 12 feet by 50 feet. This is one of the closest public campgrounds to Yellowstone National Park, making it a popular choice for visitors seeking affordable camping near the park. The location offers excellent access to scenic views of the Yellowstone River corridor and the dramatic canyon landscape.
