About

Lost Maples State Natural Area protects 2,906 acres of rugged Hill Country landscape in Bandera and Real Counties, approximately two hours northwest of San Antonio. The natural area is renowned for its stand of Uvalde bigtooth maples, a relict species that produces brilliant fall color typically from late October through November, though the display varies with weather conditions. Beyond its autumn spectacle, the park offers year-round beauty with abundant wildflowers, steep canyon walls, and the clear waters of the Sabinal River and Can Creek. The park features over 10 miles of hiking trails that wind through diverse terrain, ranging in elevation from 1,800 to 2,250 feet. Trails include a challenging loop that traverses the top of a 2,200-foot cliff, offering dramatic views of the surrounding landscape. The terrain is steep and rugged, and visitors are required to stay on designated trails to protect the shallow-rooted maple trees and sensitive natural resources. The area supports diverse wildlife, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous bird species such as the endangered golden-cheeked warbler. Camping options include 28 developed sites with water and 30-amp electric hookups, each accommodating up to eight people and equipped with picnic tables, fire rings, and shade shelters. A modern restroom with showers serves the camping area. For backcountry enthusiasts, the park offers approximately 50 primitive camping sites distributed across multiple designated backpacking areas accessible only by trail. Primitive camping requires backpacking equipment, and fires are prohibited except containerized fuel stoves for cooking. Fishing is popular in the Sabinal River and Can Creek, with free gear available for loan. Cell phone service is not available within the natural area.
