About

Lost Maples State Natural Area encompasses 2,174 acres of rugged Texas Hill Country terrain, protecting one of the most isolated stands of Uvalde bigtooth maples in the state. The park's steep canyon walls and the scenic Sabinal River create a dramatic landscape that draws visitors year-round, though the fall foliage season brings spectacular color displays. The campground offers two distinct experiences. The main camping loop provides 28 drive-in sites with water and 30-amp electric hookups, each equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and shade shelter. Restrooms with hot showers are located nearby. For those seeking solitude, 50 primitive backpacking sites are scattered across the backcountry, requiring visitors to pack out all trash and use only containerized fuel stoves for cooking. Over 10 miles of hiking trails wind through the park, including challenging routes with significant elevation changes up to 2,200-foot cliff loops. Fishing is available in the Sabinal River and Can Creek without a license when fishing from shore. The park limits daily visitors to 250 vehicles, particularly during peak fall foliage season in October and November, so advance day passes are recommended.
