About

Government Canyon State Natural Area preserves 12,244 acres of rugged Texas Hill Country on the northwestern edge of San Antonio. The walk-in tent campground provides 23 individual sites and 2 group sites, each featuring a defined tent pad, picnic table, fire ring, lantern hook, and a hutch for storing gear. Sites accommodate up to 8 people (16 for group camps) and are accessed via a short 20-60 yard walk from Parking Lot D. Potable water spigots are located in the parking area, and modern restroom facilities with hot showers are nearby. The park sits atop the Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone, making environmental stewardship a priority. Campers must keep tents on designated pads and are prohibited from tying hammocks to trees or vegetation. Over 40 miles of trails wind through grasslands, oak-juniper woodlands, and along limestone canyon walls, with opportunities for hiking and mountain biking. The Protected Habitat area, home to rare golden-cheeked warblers and black-capped vireos, opens seasonally from September through February. Pets are permitted on Frontcountry trails only, must remain leashed at all times, and are not allowed on backcountry trails. Three ADA-accessible campsites are available. A visitor center and park store provide additional services during office hours.
