Independence Pass is currently closed for winter and typically reopens around Memorial Day weekend (late May). The campground operates seasonally when the pass is open, usually late May through early November. No potable water is available on site.

The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect. * AFFECTED AREA...In Colorado, Fire Weather Zone 205 Colorado River Headwaters below 8000 feet. * TIMING...For the first Red Flag Warning, until 8 PM MDT this evening. For the second Red Flag Warning, from noon to 8 PM MDT Thursday. * WINDS...Southwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph. * RELATIVE HUMIDITY...7 to 12 percent. * IMPACTS...Any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly. WHERE...Moffat, Routt, Jackson, Grand, Rio Blanco, Garfield, Eagle, Summit, Gilpin, Clear Creek, Mesa, Pitkin, Lake, Park, Delta, Gunnison, Chaffee, Montrose, Ouray, San Miguel, Dolores, and northern parts of Montezuma and Saguache Counties. Locations include, but are not limited to Craig, Steamboat Springs, Walden, Granby, Hot Sulphur Springs, Kremmling, Meeker, Rangely, Glenwood Springs, Eagle, Vail, Breckenridge, Central City, Georgetown, Grand Junction, Aspen, Leadville, Fairplay, Delta, Gunnison, Buena Vista, Salida, Montrose, Nucla, Ouray, Telluride, Dove Creek, and Saguache. About

Lost Man Campground is a small, rustic Forest Service campground located at 10,500 feet elevation along Highway 82 on Independence Pass. The 10 campsites are nestled within a lodgepole pine forest, offering a true high-country camping experience in the White River National Forest. The campground's primary draw is its proximity to the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness, with Lost Man Trailhead located directly across the road. This provides immediate access to alpine hiking, fishing, and backcountry exploration. The historic ghost town of Independence, an early Colorado mining settlement, sits just two miles east along the pass. Due to its location on Independence Pass, the campground operates on a seasonal basis tied to the road's opening and closing. The pass typically opens around Memorial Day weekend and closes in November depending on snow conditions. No potable water is available on site. Vault toilets are provided. The winding mountain road restricts vehicles to 35 feet maximum length.
