Lost Man Campground is a small, rustic campground situated at 10,500 feet elevation along Colorado Highway 82 on Independence Pass. The campground features 10 campsites nestled within a lodgepole pine forest, offering a high-alpine camping experience in White River National Forest. The location provides exceptional access to wilderness recreation, with the Lost Man Trailhead located directly across the highway, offering entry into the Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis during the summer season when Independence Pass is open. At this high elevation, temperatures can be quite cool even in summer, and overnight freezing is possible. The historic ghost town of Independence, founded in 1879 after gold was discovered, lies just two miles to the east and makes for an interesting day trip. The campground's location makes it popular with hikers heading to Lost Man Lake, Independence Lake, and the surrounding high alpine terrain.

Directions

From Aspen, travel 14 miles east on Highway 82 toward Independence Pass. Lost Man Campground is on the right side of the highway.
