Elbert Creek Campground sits at 10,000 feet in the San Isabel National Forest, serving as a base camp for hikers climbing Mount Elbert (14,439 ft) and Mount Massive (14,421 ft), Colorado's two highest peaks. The 17 sites are nestled along Halfmoon Creek and offer a rustic mountain camping experience with vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire rings. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis only. Payment of $26 per night (includes two vehicles) can be made via self-service fee tube or by scanning a QR code with the Recreation.gov mobile app. An additional $11 fee applies for a third vehicle. Interagency Senior Pass and Access Pass holders receive a 50% discount. Access is via a dirt road from Colorado 300 near the Leadville National Fish Hatchery. The road is not maintained in winter. High altitude sickness may occur at this elevation. Dogs must be leashed at all times. Maximum occupancy is 8 people per site with 3 tents or 1 RV plus 2 tents allowed.

Directions

From Leadville, travel south approximately 3 miles on US Highway 24. Turn right on Colorado 300 at the Leadville National Fish Hatchery sign. Continue about 3/4 mile and turn left at the Halfmoon Campground sign. Follow this road and turn right at the Halfmoon sign at the end of the pavement. This dirt road leads to Elbert Creek Campground. Road is not maintained in winter.
