About

Located on the western slope of the Colorado Rockies just 5 miles from Aspen, Difficult Campground offers 47 individual campsites and a group area along the scenic Roaring Fork River. Sites are nestled in a mixed forest of aspen, cottonwood, pine, fir, scrub oak, and spruce, with many shaded by mature trees. Several sites are positioned at the river's edge, providing the soothing sounds of rushing water. The Roaring Fork River is renowned for its fly fishing, sustaining populations of large rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and brook trout. Whitewater enthusiasts can raft portions of the river, navigable by small craft to its confluence with the Colorado. Hiking trails are accessible near the campground, and neighboring beaver ponds offer additional fishing opportunities. Amenities include vault toilets, potable water at spigots, trash service, metal fire rings, pedestal grills, picnic tables, and food storage lockers. Sites accommodate trailers up to 40 feet on limited spurs. Vehicles over 35 feet cannot cross Independence Pass but can access the campground via Aspen. A 5-day stay limit applies.
