About

Lincoln Gulch Campground sits at approximately 9,700 feet elevation in a lodgepole pine forest within the Aspen-Sopris Ranger District of White River National Forest. The 7-site campground offers a quiet base for exploring the upper Roaring Fork Valley and the alpine terrain near Independence Pass. Access is via Lincoln Creek Road, a gravel road passable by two-wheel drive vehicles that branches off Highway 82 about 11 miles southeast of Aspen. Recreational opportunities abound in the surrounding area, including hiking, mountain biking, fishing in nearby streams, and 4-wheel drive routes that penetrate deeper into the backcountry. The campground is well-positioned for day trips to Independence Pass summit and trailheads accessing the Collegiate Peaks and Hunter-Fryingpan Wilderness areas. Facilities are basic: vault toilets are provided, but there is no potable water on site, so campers must bring their own supply. Sites operate first-come, first-served with no advance reservations available. Due to the narrow, steep, and winding nature of Independence Pass, vehicles and vehicle-trailer combinations over 35 feet in length are prohibited on Highway 82 over the pass.

Directions

From Aspen, travel southeast on Highway 82 toward Independence Pass for approximately 11 miles. Turn right onto Lincoln Creek Road (Forest Road 106). Continue 2.5 miles on the gravel road to the campground entrance. The road is rough but passable for two-wheel drive vehicles in dry conditions.
