About

The Bureau of Land Management's Loon Lake Recreation Site sits at 392 feet elevation in Oregon's Coast Range, 20 miles east-southeast of Reedsport. This treasured family recreation area centers on a 260-acre naturally dammed lake formed by a landslide of sandstone blocks and boulders. The lake stretches 2 miles long and reaches 190 feet deep, offering one of the Coast Range's few warm, sandy beaches. The campground provides 53 sites accommodating tents, trucks, trailers, and RVs, all with paved parking pads shaded by old-growth Douglas-fir, western hemlock, red alder, and bigleaf maple. Each site includes a fire ring and picnic table, with most featuring barbecue grills and tent pads. Day-use facilities include picnic tables, barbecue grills, a swim area, fishing dock, and boat launch. A quarter-mile trail at the south end of the day-use area leads to a waterfall through serene old-growth forest. The forest understory showcases native rhododendron, salal, salmon berry, thimble berry, vine maple, and ferns. Wildlife includes Roosevelt elk, deer, bear, bobcat, and diverse bird species from Marbled Murrelets and Spotted Owls to Steller's Jays and Ospreys. The site is part of the Umpqua River watershed draining to the Pacific Ocean.
