About
Longleaf Campground is located in a mixed pine and hardwood upland forest at Congaree National Park, positioned at a higher elevation than the floodplain and not subject to regular flooding events. The campground sits approximately half a mile from the Harry Hampton Visitor Center on the park entrance road. Ten individual sites accommodate 1-8 campers with up to 3 tents per site, while four group sites are available for parties of 9-24 people with up to 12 tents. All sites feature fire rings and picnic tables set among pines and hardwoods that provide shade throughout much of the day. This is a walk-in tent-only campground. Vehicles must be parked in the designated parking lot, and campers walk a short distance to reach their sites. RV and car camping are not permitted, though RVs may park at the visitor center overnight if occupants camp at designated sites. Two vault toilets are located near the parking area. No running water is available at the campground, but potable water is accessible 24/7 at filling stations at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. Trash and recycling receptacles are available near the parking lot. Campers have direct access to 27 miles of hiking trails, including the Longleaf Trail that connects to the visitor center and the famous Boardwalk Loop. An open field in the middle of the campground provides excellent wildlife viewing opportunities for birds, butterflies, and southern fox squirrels. Two canoe and kayak launches are located 5-10 minutes away by car for paddling Cedar Creek through the old-growth bottomland hardwood forest.
