Special Weather Statement issued January 18 at 11:37PM EST by NWS Columbia SC
Lingering moisture and puddles from earlier rainfall will create patchy black ice on area roads during the overnight and early morning hours. Icy spots could form on paved surfaces such as bridges and overpasses, primary and secondary roads, parking lots, sidewalks and driveways. Some isolated areas of freezing fog are also possible overnight and in the early morning which could lead to some additional slick spots, especially on elevated roadways.
About
Aiken State Park is one of 16 original South Carolina state parks, built in 1934 by two Civilian Conservation Corps companies, including an African American detachment. The park spans 1,067 acres along the South Fork of the Edisto River and offers a scenic 1.7-mile canoe and kayak trail that attracts paddlers from across the region. The park features four lakes for fishing, including Cabin Lake with its peaceful overlook and calming spillway. The campground has 25 spacious campsites on packed sand, with 19 sites offering water and 30/50 amp electrical hookups, and 6 sites (numbers 20-25) that also include sewer hookups. Some sites accommodate RVs up to 35 feet. The campground provides convenient access to restrooms with hot showers. Primitive group camping is also available along the riverbank for organized groups, featuring picnic tables, fire rings, and a privy. Beyond camping, visitors can enjoy fishing in the Edisto River and spring-fed lakes, explore hiking trails including the Jungle Trail, and rent canoes or kayaks for river exploration. The park also features an artesian well near the canoe launch, picnic shelters, and a seasonal swimming area. Built by the CCC during the Great Depression, many original structures remain standing today as testament to their enduring craftsmanship.
