About

Bluff Hike-In Camping offers a backcountry-style experience within a frontcountry setting at Congaree National Park. The campground sits in a mixed pine/hardwood upland forest adjacent to an area undergoing restoration to longleaf pine savanna. Its elevated position keeps it above the flooding that affects nearly 80% of the park roughly ten times per year. The 6 individual sites each accommodate up to 8 campers and 3 tents. Sites are arranged around the edges of an open, grassy clearing. Fire rings and picnic tables are provided at every site. Hammock camping is permitted with tree-safe straps. This is a primitive campground with no restrooms, running water, or trash service. Vault toilets are available 24/7 at Longleaf Campground about 1 mile away via the Bluff Trail, and potable water filling stations operate 24/7 at the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. All waste must be packed out. Access requires hiking approximately 1 mile from either the visitor center via the Firefly Trail or from Longleaf Campground via the Bluff Trail. Trails are mostly flat but include small hills and root hazards.

Directions

From I-77, take Exit 5 onto SC Highway 48 East/Bluff Road and drive approximately 8 miles. Take a slight right onto Old Bluff Road and follow it 4.5 miles to the park entrance sign. Continue 1 mile to the Harry Hampton Visitor Center. The campground is a 1-mile hike via the Firefly Trail. GPS address: 100 National Park Road, Hopkins, SC 29061.
