Long Lake Shelter is a primitive three-sided shelter located on Wrangell Island, approximately 28 miles southeast of the town of Wrangell via Forest Roads 6265, 6270, and 6271. The shelter is reached by hiking a 0.6-mile trail from the Long Lake Recreation Site trailhead. This rustic facility offers a genuine Southeast Alaska backcountry experience surrounded by temperate rainforest. The shelter provides basic amenities including firewood and a 14-foot skiff with oars for exploring Long Lake. An outhouse is available near the shelter. Visitors should bring their own drinking water, bedding, cooking utensils, and personal flotation devices. The area supports non-motorized boating, swimming, fishing, and day hiking.

Directions

From Wrangell, travel approximately 28 miles southeast on Forest Road 6265, then Forest Road 6270, and finally Forest Road 6271 to the Long Lake Recreation Site. From the trailhead, hike 0.6 miles to reach the shelter.
