About
Long Lake Shelter is a rustic three-sided shelter situated on the north end of Long Lake, deep within Wrangell Island in Southeast Alaska's Tongass National Forest. This free, first-come first-served shelter offers a remote backcountry experience with basic amenities including firewood and a 14-foot skiff with oars for exploring the lake. Access to the shelter requires driving 28 miles southeast of Wrangell on Forest Roads 6265, 6270, and 6271, then hiking 0.6 miles on a fully boardwalk-surfaced trail that descends moderately to the lake. The trail begins at Long Lake Recreation Site on Forest Road 6271. Recreation opportunities include non-motorized boating, swimming, fishing, day hiking, and wildlife viewing. Visitors should come prepared with bedding, cooking utensils, personal flotation devices, and treated drinking water, as potable water is not available on site. An outhouse provides basic sanitation facilities.
