About

Long Lake Shelter is a rustic three-sided shelter situated at the north end of Long Lake on Wrangell Island in the Tongass National Forest. Accessed via the 0.6-mile Long Lake Trail from the Long Lake Recreation Site, the shelter is located approximately 28 miles southeast of Wrangell off Forest Roads 6265, 6270, and 6271. The site provides basic backcountry amenities including firewood and a 14-foot skiff with oars for exploring the lake. Visitors must come prepared as the shelter does not provide bedding, cooking utensils, or personal flotation devices. Water is available from the lake or nearby stream but must be treated before consumption. An outhouse is available on-site. The remote location experiences light use and offers opportunities for fishing, paddling, and backcountry camping in Southeast Alaska's temperate rainforest environment. The shelter serves as a rustic base camp for exploring the Long Lake area. Visitors should be prepared for typical Southeast Alaska weather conditions and be self-sufficient. This is bear country, and proper food storage and bear awareness practices are essential.
