About
Berg Bay Cabin sits on a gentle slope overlooking Berg Bay, Blake Channel, and the surrounding mountains of Alaska's Inside Passage. Built in 1965, this 16x16 A-frame cabin provides a true backcountry experience while remaining relatively accessible from Wrangell. The surrounding rainforest consists primarily of Sitka spruce and western hemlock, with the nearby Aaron Creek tideflats featuring extensive grass sedges and wildflowers. The cabin accommodates up to seven guests with two single bunks (one with a trundle), a sleeping loft, and includes a table with benches, oil stove requiring #1 heating oil (not provided), fire grill, broom, and partially covered porch with a wooden cooler box. A 25-foot mooring float anchored in the bay is reserved for cabin guests. Water is available seasonally from a small stream behind the cabin but must be treated before use. Recreational opportunities abound with the 0.4-mile boardwalked Aaron Creek Trail and the 4-mile unmaintained Berg Creek Trail leading to Berg Basin. Aaron and Oerns Creeks provide fishing for pink salmon (mid-July to mid-August), silver and chum salmon (August to September), and steelhead (April and May). Crabbing is productive in Berg Bay, and the tideflats are popular for waterfowl hunting. Wildlife includes brown and black bears, moose, sea otters, and mountain goats on surrounding ridges.
Directions
Located on the mainland along the north shore of Berg Bay, east of Blake Channel near the mouth of Aaron Creek. Access by boat (22 miles through Eastern Passage from Wrangell) or float plane (15 miles from Wrangell). Boat arrivals must time entry with high tide due to shallow bay entrance.
