Special Weather Statement issued February 8 at 1:57PM AKST by NWS Juneau AK
After a series of shortwaves that brought rain and gusty winds over the past few days, a stronger front will approach southeast Alaska from the west on Tuesday. South to southeast winds will increase through the day Tuesday. Confidence is increasing for windy conditions with strong gusts Tuesday night into Wednesday morning as the front pushes west to east across southeast Alaska. Gales with storm force gusts will be possible ahead and along the frontal passage, especially along north-south oriented channels and along the coastal waters. A period of moderate to heavy rainfall will be possible with the frontal passage, but with the progressive nature of the front, flooding is not expected at this time. Another gale to potentially storm force low will quickly lift northeast into the Gulf and looks to push across southeast Alaska sometime later Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another round of strong gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall. Further details on the high wind and flooding potential for this system will be honed in on in the coming days. Looking further ahead, a cooling trend is favored to commence in the wake of these passing systems by late work week into the weekend. Snow levels will begin to lower and a colder outflow wind pattern could set up by late weekend. This could result in a return of snow for some coastal communities, especially across northern southeast Alaska. Further details on the pattern change and snow potential will be honed as the weekend approaches.
About
Berg Bay Cabin sits on the mainland's north shore of Berg Bay, overlooking Blake Channel and distant mountains within Alaska's Inside Passage. Built in 1965, this 16-by-16-foot A-frame cabin accommodates up to seven people with two single bunks (one with trundle bed) and a second-floor loft. The cabin includes a table with benches, oil stove (No. 1 stove oil required), fire grill, broom, and a partially covered front porch with wooden cooler box. An outhouse and 25-foot mooring float serve cabin guests. The surrounding rainforest consists primarily of Sitka spruce and western hemlock with scattered cedar and muskeg. The nearby Aaron Creek tideflats feature extensive grass sedges and wildflowers, creating habitat for brown and black bears, moose, sea otters, grouse, ptarmigan, and waterfowl. Mountain goats occasionally appear on surrounding ridges. Two trails provide hiking access: the 0.4-mile boardwalked Aaron Creek Trail extending to the grassflats, and the unmaintained 4-mile Berg Creek Trail leading to Berg Basin. Fishing opportunities include pink salmon in mid-July through mid-August, silver and chum salmon from August to September, and steelhead in April and May in Aaron and Oerns Creeks. Crabbing is available in Berg Bay and saltwater areas near the tideflats, though high levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning have been reported. The tideflats are popular for waterfowl hunting during designated seasons. Kayakers and canoers can explore Berg Bay, but must consult tide charts as the bay entrance is shallow and may dry at low tide. Guests must bring their own water or treat stream water, pack heating oil, sleeping gear, cooking equipment, and pack out all trash.
Directions
Located on the mainland along the north shore of Berg Bay, east of Blake Channel near the mouth of Aaron Creek. Accessible by boat (22 miles from Wrangell through Eastern Passage) or floatplane (15 miles from Wrangell). Boat access requires arrival at high tide due to shallow bay entrance. A 25-foot mooring float is available for cabin guests.
