About

Lower Salamander Creek Campground offers a rustic camping experience on Wrangell Island in southeast Alaska's Tongass National Forest. Located 23 miles southeast of Wrangell off Forest Roads 6265 and 50050, this free campground sees light use and provides a quiet retreat near Salamander Creek. The site features three separate covered picnic shelters, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring for cooking. A small sandy beach adjacent to the shelter nearest the creek provides swimming opportunities when water levels are high, and anglers can fish directly from the creek. An outhouse serves the campground. Campers should come prepared with their own drinking water, as only untreated creek water is available on-site. The remote location on Wrangell Island means no hookups, showers, or other developed amenities are available. Access to Wrangell Island is by ferry via the Alaska Marine Highway or by air.
