About

Little Mattie Campground occupies a prime location on Ruedi Reservoir in Colorado's White River National Forest. Situated at 7,800 feet elevation amid mixed conifer forest, the campground offers 19 standard sites suitable for tents, trailers, and RVs up to 30 feet. Each back-in site features a picnic table, campfire ring, and bear-resistant food storage locker. Campers have access to vault toilets and drinking water spigots, though no electrical hookups are available. The Fryingpan River below Ruedi Dam is renowned for its fly fishing. Large rainbow, brown, cutthroat, and brook trout feed on Mysis shrimp from the reservoir. The stretch from the dam to the Roaring Fork River confluence holds Gold Medal Waters designation, with regulations requiring artificial flies and lures only, and catch-and-release for all trout except browns over 14 inches. Beyond fishing, the area offers boating, swimming, and water skiing on the reservoir. The Ruedi Trail begins near the boat ramp and climbs over 3,000 feet across 8 miles to Red Mountain, rewarding hikers with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks.

Directions

From Basalt, CO, travel 16 miles east on Fryingpan River Road (County Road 104). About 1 mile past the Ruedi Reservoir dam, turn right into the Little Maud/Little Mattie/Mollie B campground complex.
