About

Elk Wallow Campground offers a secluded camping experience in the White River National Forest, situated approximately 28 miles east of Basalt along the Frying Pan River corridor. The campground is designed for campers seeking a quiet, primitive setting away from the more developed recreation areas near Ruedi Reservoir. The 7 campsites accommodate tents, pickup campers, and small trailers. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, and parking spur. The campground has one vault toilet but no potable water, so campers must bring their own water supply. The unpaved campground roads and lack of hookups make this site best suited for tent campers and smaller camping units rather than large RVs. Fishing in the North Fork Mormon Creek is a primary draw for visitors. The area provides opportunities for dispersed recreation in a less-trafficked portion of the forest. Nearby services including gas, groceries, and a dump station are available in Basalt.

Directions

From Basalt, travel east on Frying Pan River Road (County Road 105/Forest Road 105) for 24 miles past Ruedi Reservoir. Turn left onto Forest Service Road 501 and continue 4 miles to Elk Wallow Campground.
