About

Limber Luke Campground and Trailhead is a rustic camping facility located in the Nez Perce-Clearwater National Forests, serving primarily as a trailhead for the Anderson Butte National Recreation Trail #505. Set in open timber at an elevation of 5,400 feet, this small campground offers a peaceful backcountry experience away from developed amenities. The campground is particularly popular with big game hunters due to its access to prime hunting areas and the availability of a stock loading ramp for horses and pack animals. The site accommodates up to five camper vehicles and provides basic amenities including a fire ring and vault toilet. No drinking water is available on-site, and visitors must pack out all trash as garbage services are not provided. Access to Limber Luke requires traveling approximately 14 miles from the small town of Elk City via Sweeney Hill Road, with the route passing through open meadows and scenic backcountry. The remote location and primitive nature of this campground make it ideal for self-sufficient campers seeking solitude and trail access in Idaho's rugged wilderness.

Directions

Traveling east on Highway 14 into Elk City, turn left on Sweeney Hill Road at the convenience store and Laundromat, cross the bridge over Elk Creek and stay right at the next junction. Continue approximately 14 miles from Elk City to the campground.
