Leech Lake Recreation Area is nestled in the heart of the Chippewa National Forest on the banks of the Leech Lake River in Federal Dam, Minnesota. Operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, this well-appointed campground offers direct boat access to Portage Bay on Leech Lake, one of Minnesota's premier fishing destinations with 316 miles of shoreline. The campground features 73 wooded sites including 65 standard electric sites with 30/50-amp service, 8 full hookup sites (electric, water, sewer), and 4 primitive walk-to tent sites. Modern amenities include flush toilets, hot showers, drinking water, laundry facilities, and a dump station. Both back-in and pull-through sites are available, with some accommodating vehicles up to 138 feet. Beyond fishing, campers can explore miles of scenic hiking trails including the Soo Line, Heartland, and North Country National Scenic Trails. The campground offers recreational facilities including basketball, volleyball, badminton, and shuffleboard courts, horseshoe pits, and playground areas. Wildlife viewing is excellent, with loons commonly heard calling across the water.

Directions

From Grand Rapids, take Highway 2 west for 33 miles to Bena. Turn south onto County Road 8 and proceed 8 miles to Federal Dam. From Bemidji, take Highway 2 east for 35 miles to Bena, turn south onto County Road 8 and proceed 8 miles to Federal Dam. From Walker, take Highway 200 east for 20 miles to County Road 8, turn north and proceed 14 miles to Federal Dam.
