About
Leavitt Meadows Campground is nestled amidst Jeffrey pines alongside the West Walker River in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. At an elevation of 7,200 feet, this campground serves as an ideal base for fishing, hiking, and backpacking adventures in the Eastern Sierra. The nearby Leavitt Meadows Trailhead is the starting point for trails along the West Walker River into an area of lake-filled basins within the Hoover Wilderness. The campground is particularly popular with climbers who use the trails to approach Tower Peak, which offers both technical climbs and scrambles. A permit is required for overnight use of the West Walker River area within the Hoover Wilderness. The campground features small RV sites (under 24 feet) and tent-friendly camping, with all sites offering picnic tables, campfire rings, and food storage lockers. Leavitt Meadows is located along Highway 108, approximately six miles from Sonora Junction. The campground sits at a lower elevation than Sonora Pass itself, making it accessible earlier in the season than higher elevation campgrounds. The West Walker River provides excellent fishing opportunities, and the surrounding Jeffrey pine forest offers a scenic mountain setting.
Directions
From Highway 395 south in Bridgeport, drive approximately 17 miles to Highway 108 at Sonora Junction. Turn left on Highway 108 and go approximately six miles. The campground is on left hand side of highway.
