Chipmunk Rapids Recreation Area is a small, rustic campground situated on the Pine River, one of Florence County's two federally designated Wild Rivers. This quiet 6-site campground offers a peaceful getaway for campers seeking solitude and access to pristine wilderness. Each campsite is equipped with a fire ring, and the campground features vault toilets and excellent drinking water from an artesian well. The campground serves as the only national forest campground on the Pine River and provides direct access to exceptional outdoor recreation. Located south of the Lauterman Lake Semi-Primitive Non-Motorized area, campers can explore the Chipmunk Rapids Trail, which connects to the extensive Lauterman National Recreation Trail system. The Assessor's Interpretive Trail, featuring a one-mile loop through 150-year-old hemlock and pine, is adjacent to the campground. This is an ideal base camp for paddlers, hikers, and anglers looking to experience the wild character of the Pine River and surrounding forest. The campground's small size and remote location make it perfect for those seeking a true backcountry camping experience while still having basic amenities.

Directions

From Florence, travel west 17 miles on Highway 70 to the intersection with FR 2450 (Dream Lake Road). Turn left (south) on FR 2450 and drive 1 mile to FR 2156 (Chipmunk Rapids Road). Continue straight 2.4 miles on FR 2156 to the campground.
