About

Chipmunk Rapids Recreation Area is a quiet, primitive campground tucked away in the Florence District of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The six campsites are equipped with fire rings and share access to a vault toilet and an artesian well that flows year-round, producing excellent drinking water. The setting offers solitude for campers who prefer drive-up accessibility without the crowds of larger campgrounds. The campground sits on the Pine River, designated as a Wisconsin Wild and Scenic River, making it a popular put-in and take-out point for canoe trips. Anglers target brown and brook trout in the river, with bass and panfish available in nearby lakes. A one-mile connecting trail leads to Lost Lake Campground, and the south trailhead of the Lauterman Lake National Recreation Trail lies just north of the river. All sites operate on a first-come, first-served basis with self-registration at a kiosk near the entrance. The campground typically operates from May through October, though access roads are not maintained for snow removal in winter.
