About

Lamping Homestead Recreation Area preserves a piece of Appalachian Ohio history while offering primitive camping in the Marietta Unit of Wayne National Forest. The site was once the farmstead of the Lamping family, who homesteaded this remote hollow in the 1800s. Today, the area features six walk-in tent campsites spread through a mixed hardwood and pine forest, providing excellent privacy and seclusion. The centerpiece of the recreation area is a 2-acre pond stocked with bluegill, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. Two loop hiking trails of 3.5 and 1.5 miles explore the surrounding hills and pass by the historic Lamping family cemetery. Eight picnic sites and a picnic shelter are also available for day use. This is a true primitive camping experience with vault toilets but no potable water, so campers must pack in their own drinking water.
