Lamping Homestead Recreation Area offers a truly secluded camping experience in Monroe County within the Marietta Unit of Wayne National Forest. The campground features six walk-in campsites that require a short carry from the parking area, ensuring a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. The sites are located near a scenic 2-acre pond surrounded by a lovely stand of pine trees, stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill, and channel catfish for shore fishing. The recreation area provides excellent hiking opportunities with two loop trails: a shorter 1.5-mile loop and a longer 3.5-mile loop that traverses rolling Appalachian foothills between Haney and Pleasant ridges. The trails are also open to mountain biking during designated seasons. Wildlife viewing is abundant, with white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, forest songbirds, and various reptiles and amphibians commonly spotted throughout the area. This historic site was once the homestead of the Lamping family who settled here in the 1800s. A cemetery on the hillside adds to the area's tranquil and mysterious character. The campground also features eight picnic sites, a picnic shelter, and vault toilets. No potable water is available on-site, so campers must bring their own. At $10 per night for walk-in sites, Lamping Homestead offers an affordable and authentic national forest camping experience in one of Ohio's most isolated and scenic locations.
