About

Lake Somerville State Park Birch Creek Unit occupies the northern shore of Lake Somerville, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reservoir in Burleson County. The 3,155-acre park offers diverse camping options across three developed camping loops: Yaupon (sites 1-30), Post Oak (sites 31-60), and Old Hickory (sites 61-101). All 99 sites feature water and electric hookups, with 21 sites equipped with 50-amp service and the remainder offering 30-amp. Eight sites have ADA-accessible paved pathways. An additional 10 equestrian campsites with water hookups and corrals are available for those camping with horses. The park connects to the 21-mile Lake Somerville Trailway, a multi-use corridor linking Birch Creek to the Nails Creek Unit on the lake's south side. The trail accommodates hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding through post oak savanna and bottomland habitats. Primitive camping and a group camp are available along the trailway for backcountry users. Lake Somerville supports fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, and crappie, with boat ramps and watercraft rentals available. The park provides habitat for white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and numerous bird species, making it a destination for wildlife observation. Hunting is permitted during designated seasons in specific areas.
