About

Stephen F. Austin State Park preserves 663 acres of Texas history and natural beauty along the banks of the Brazos River in San Felipe. This park marks the location where Stephen F. Austin chose to establish his headquarters for Anglo-American colonization of Texas, making it a cornerstone of Texas history and earning the area recognition as the "Cradle of Texas Liberty." The campground offers diverse camping options to suit every preference. RV campers can choose from 38 pull-through sites with full hookups including water, 30-amp electricity, and sewer connections. Tent campers have 39 sites with water hookups, while those seeking a more primitive experience can select from 25 walk-in campsites. All sites feature picnic tables and fire rings, with restrooms and showers available nearby. The park also offers screened shelters, a cabin, and group camping facilities. Five miles of trails traverse the park, winding along the riverbank under tall hardwood trees and through unique upland swamp ecosystems. The Nature Trail provides educational opportunities to learn about native plants. Beyond camping and hiking, visitors can explore the nearby San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site to walk the original townsite and visit the museum dedicated to Texas' early settlers. Located just 50 minutes west of Houston, the park provides convenient access to nature and history for urban dwellers seeking a quick getaway.
