About

Lake of the Woods is a small high-elevation lake in Sierra County within Tahoe National Forest. The campground offers approximately 15 primitive sites spread along the shoreline, each equipped with a fire pit and picnic table. This free, first-come, first-served campground can be quite popular, especially on weekends, drawing both campers and anglers. The lake is stocked by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife with brown trout fingerlings, and it also holds rainbow trout. No potable water is available; campers must bring their own supply or treat water from the lake. Vault toilets serve the area. The property around the lake is a mix of public Forest Service land and private property. Fire restrictions may differ depending on whether you're camped on the public or private portion, so pay attention to posted regulations. Due to the high elevation, the campground typically opens later in spring once winter snow melts enough to allow road access.
