About
Lake of the Woods Campground sits at high elevation in Sierra County within Tahoe National Forest, offering approximately 15 free camping spots situated along the shoreline of a small, scenic lake. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Each site includes a fire pit and picnic table. The lake is popular, especially on weekends, and supports both brown and rainbow trout fishing through regular plantings by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. Due to its high elevation location, the campground opens later in spring than lower elevation sites as it takes longer for winter snows to melt and provide road access. There is no piped water available at the campground; visitors must bring their own water or treat and filter water from the lake or nearby sources. A camp host is generally available during the operating season. The lake has both public Forest Service property and private property, and fire restrictions may differ depending on where you camp. Visitors should be aware of current fire restrictions and ensure they are camping on the appropriate land. The surrounding area offers opportunities for hiking, fishing, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Sierra Nevada.
Directions
