About

Cottonwood Creek Campground occupies a forested setting along its namesake creek in California's Sierra Nevada. The 49 standard nonelectric sites are nestled among Jeffrey pine, red fir, and white fir, offering shade and reasonable privacy. Highway 89 runs nearby, so some road noise is audible. Each campsite comes equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring, and the campground provides vault toilets, potable water from faucets, and trash collection. The location serves well as a base camp for multiple activities. Anglers can fish Cottonwood Creek or venture to nearby Sardine Lakes (35 minutes northwest via Highway 49) or Stampede Reservoir (45 minutes southeast). Hunters frequent the surrounding national forest lands in season. The Cottonwood Creek Botanical Trail and Overlook Trail both begin within the campground, offering short interpretive hikes without needing to drive. Lake Tahoe lies approximately 40 minutes south, providing access to boating, kayaking, swimming, and additional hiking. Bears are active in the area, so all food must be stored in approved bear-resistant containers. Firewood should be purchased locally and burned on-site to prevent spread of pests.

Directions

From Sierraville, drive 4.5 miles south on Highway 89. The campground entrance is on the left, along Cottonwood Creek. From Truckee, drive north on Interstate 80 to Highway 89, then continue approximately 20 miles north to the campground.
