Special Weather Statement issued January 18 at 8:24PM EST by NWS Wakefield VA

January 18th, 8:24 PM — 9:00 AM

With temperatures dropping well below freezing tonight into Monday morning, black ice development is likely as wet roads freeze. Roads may therefore become slick and slippery, especially on untreated, secondary, and back roads. Slow down and use caution when driving, especially when traversing roads that have not been treated. If you are walking outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways. These surfaces could be icy and slippery, increasing your risk of a fall and injury. Road and sidewalk conditions should improve later Monday morning as temperatures warm to above freezing.

About

Located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, Kiptopeke State Park provides recreational access to the Chesapeake Bay and serves as a major stopover point on the Atlantic flyway for migratory birds. The park features year-round accommodations including two and three-bedroom cabins, six-bedroom family lodges that sleep 16, a bunkhouse, and four yurts. Seasonal camping from early March through early December includes full-service RV sites with electric, water, and select sewer hookups, plus tent-only sites. The park offers extensive outdoor recreation with over 5 miles of hiking and biking trails through upland hardwood forest and coastal dunes, a lighted 24-hour fishing pier, boat ramp, kayak rentals, and nearly half a mile of unguarded swimming beach on the Chesapeake Bay open Memorial Day through Labor Day. The iconic concrete ships offshore provide excellent fishing opportunities. Educational programs focus on natural history, birding, and bay ecology, particularly during the fall migration season.

Directions

Located on Virginia's Eastern Shore, three miles from the northern terminus of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel on Route 13. Turn west on Route 704; the park entrance is within a half-mile.
