About
Kingston Campground is a popular developed site nestled along Kingston Creek in the Toiyabe Range of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. Situated at 7,100 feet elevation in a remote canyon setting, the campground offers 12 sites surrounded by high desert mountain scenery. Originally developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s-40s, it serves as the northern entry point to the Toiyabe Crest National Recreation Trail and provides access to nearby Groves Lake, a small county-owned lake popular for fishing. The campground features picnic tables and fire pits at each site, with vault toilets available but no potable water on site. A stock loading ramp accommodates visitors traveling with horses or pack animals, making it an ideal basecamp for backcountry adventures. The location provides access to the Arc Dome Wilderness and Bunker Hill, one of Nevada's tallest peaks. With its remote location approximately 21 miles from Austin via US-50 and State Route 376, Kingston Campground attracts visitors seeking authentic wilderness experiences away from crowds. The campground operates as a first-come, first-served facility with no reservation system and no fees. Certified weed-free hay is required for stock animals, and dogs must be leashed. The site experiences heavy use during its operating season and serves as a popular staging area for mountain biking, OHV riding, fishing, and backpacking trips into the Toiyabe Range.
Directions
From Austin, follow US-50 East to State Route 376 South for 16 miles to the campground turnoff sign. The campground is 5 miles west of the State Route 376 turnoff.
