Big Creek Campground

Closed — Closed for the season. Generally open mid-May through late October, weather and conditions permitting. First-come, first-served, no reservations.

About

Big Creek Campground sits at the mouth of a canyon on the west side of the Toiyabe Range in central Nevada, about 12 miles southwest of Austin. This free campground offers 8 relatively open campsites surrounded by water birch, cottonwood, and Russian olive trees, with Big Creek running directly adjacent to the campground. The setting provides a quiet basecamp for exploring Kingston Canyon and Groves Lake. The campground is accessible via Forest Service Road 002, which requires a high-clearance vehicle due to road conditions. While the site is fairly open with limited large vegetation, making it suitable for travel trailers in the campsites themselves, trailers are prohibited from crossing the top of Forest Service Road 002. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. Amenities are minimal: vault toilets and picnic tables are provided, but campers must bring their own water as none is available on-site. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on leash, and visitors bringing horses or pack animals must use certified weed-free hay. Popular activities include hiking, backpacking, fishing in both the creek and nearby lakes, OHV riding, and mountain biking.
