Kanopolis State Park

Open — Open year-round. Reservations are available for camping dates April 1st through October 31st via ReserveAmerica.com or the CampIt-KS app. Water is available at all utility campsites and dump stations. A daily vehicle permit is required separately from campsite reservations.

Kanopolis State Park, established in 1955 as Kansas' first state park, sprawls across the scenic Smoky Hills region of eastern Ellsworth County. The park is characterized by towering Dakota sandstone bluffs, deep canyons including the famous Horsethief Canyon, and diverse terrain ranging from rolling prairie to wooded areas. The 3,500-acre Kanopolis Lake provides excellent opportunities for fishing, boating, and water sports, while the adjacent 12,500-acre Smoky Hill Wildlife Area offers abundant hunting and wildlife viewing. The park features 14 campgrounds split between the Langley Point and Horsethief areas, offering more than 200 campsites that accommodate various camping styles. Options range from primitive sites to full hookup RV sites with water, sewer, and electric service. Six modern cabins are available year-round for those preferring a more comfortable experience. The park also includes specialized equestrian camping at the Rockin' K area. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore over 30 miles of multi-use trails open to hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders, with difficulty levels ranging from easy to challenging. Notable trails wind through Red Rocks Canyon and include creek crossings and stunning vistas. The park also manages nearby Mushroom Rock State Park, featuring unusual geological formations. Historical attractions include Faris Caves, carved by early pioneers and used as living quarters and shelter.

Located northwest of Marquette along K-141, about 5 miles north of the K-4/K-141 junction or about 7 miles south of the K-140/K-141 junction east of Ellsworth.
