About
Sand Hills State Park encompasses 1,123 acres of scenic sand dunes northeast of Hutchinson in south-central Kansas. The dunes formed over millions of years as streams carried sediment from the Rocky Mountains into the Arkansas River valley, with southwestern winds shaping the fine sand into dunes that became stabilized by vegetation. Today, the park is one of the best places in Kansas to experience sand dune terrain on public land.
The campground provides 64 utility sites, with 44 offering full hookups (electric, water, and sewer) and 20 providing electric and water connections. All sites feature concrete camping pads, fire rings, lantern stands, picnic tables, and covered grills. Fourteen sites include horse pens with corrals and frost-free hydrants for year-round equestrian use. A four-unit family restroom and shower building serves the campground, along with a free dump station.
Fourteen miles of trails wind through diverse ecosystems including sand dunes, native grasslands, marshlands with wildlife observation blinds, and woodlands. Trails accommodate hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Resident wildlife includes deer, ducks, geese, songbirds, and muskrats, with vegetation ranging from bluestem grass and cottonwood trees to seasonal wildflowers.
