About

Sand Hills State Park encompasses 1,123 acres of preserved natural landscape featuring distinctive sand dunes rising 10 to 40 feet high, interspersed with grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands. Established in 1974 as Kansas' 22nd state park, the area began with 640 acres transferred from the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory and grew through a 320-acre donation from the Dillon Family and an additional 163-acre acquisition. The park features eight named trails totaling 14 miles that weave between sand dunes, through grasslands and trees, and around ponds. All trails accommodate hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The campground offers 64 utility sites: 44 sites with water, sewer, and electric hookups, and 20 sites with water and sewer only. The park operates year-round with first-come, first-served camping during winter months (November through mid-April) when online reservations are not available. Sand Hills State Park is popular for its challenging terrain and diverse ecosystems uncommon in Kansas. In addition to trail activities, visitors enjoy bird watching, wildflower walks, jogging, and hunting by permit. Modern facilities include vault toilets at trailheads, and seasonal restroom/shower facilities and a dump station that operate from mid-April through October.
