Beach Hazards Statement issued May 22 at 10:15AM CDT until May 22 at 10:00PM CDT by NWS Duluth MN
* WHAT...Dangerous swimming conditions are expected along the Lake Superior shoreline due to high wave action and strong rip currents. * WHERE...Minnesota Park Point and Wisconsin Point Beaches. * WHEN...Until 10 PM CDT this evening. * IMPACTS...High wave action can make swimming difficult on days such as this. Incoming waves in rapid succession can tire even an experienced swimmer quickly. Rip currents can move you away from land. To avoid being swept away, swim parallel to the shore to exit a rip current.
About
Jay Cooke State Park's camper cabins provide a rustic lodging experience along the dramatic St. Louis River gorge in Carlton County, about 10 miles southwest of Duluth. The five one-room cabins measure 12 by 16 feet and feature wooden bunkbeds with mattresses, a table, benches, electricity, heat, and a screened-in porch. Each cabin accommodates up to six people (five in accessible units). No indoor plumbing is available. Outside each cabin sits a picnic table and fire ring with a grate for grilling. Only approved firewood may be burned, available for purchase at the park office. Cooking inside is limited to crockpots and coffeepots; all other cooking must occur outdoors at the fire ring. The cabins are located near the park campground where seasonal restrooms, showers, and drinking water are available. Primitive toilets operate year-round. The park spans over 8,000 acres along the St. Louis River and is known for its tilted slate rock formations, swinging suspension bridge, and extensive trail system with over 50 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing. The River Inn Interpretive Center, built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s, offers naturalist programs and exhibits.
Directions
From Carlton, go 3 miles east on State Highway 210. The park is located approximately 10 miles southwest of Duluth.
