About

Jamaica State Park encompasses 772 acres along the West River in Windham County, Vermont. Opened in 1969, the park occupies land once home to the village of Jamaica, which was flooded when Ball Mountain Dam was constructed upstream. The campground spreads across forested terrain featuring hemlock groves and mixed hardwoods, with 41 tent/RV sites and 18 lean-tos available. The park is renowned for its whitewater paddling opportunities, particularly during scheduled dam releases from Ball Mountain Dam that create Class II-III rapids. Salmon Hole provides a popular swimming area with a sandy beach. The West River Trail offers hiking and biking along the old railroad grade, while Hamilton Falls Trail leads to one of Vermont's tallest waterfalls. Facilities include two restroom buildings with flush toilets, hot and cold running water, and token-operated hot showers ($0.50 for 5 minutes). A dump station is available for RVs. Each campsite has a fire ring and picnic table on a gravel pad. The park also features a playground, volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and a picnic shelter for campers. Note that the Depot Street Bridge leading to the park has an 8-ton weight limit.

Directions

From Route 30 in the village of Jamaica, turn north onto Depot Street. Continue 0.5 miles to the park entrance. Note: Depot Street Bridge has an 8-ton weight limit.
