Stratton View Shelter & Tent Area

Open

Open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. No reservations or fees. Maximum two consecutive nights. Water must be treated or filtered from pond or spring sources.

About

Stratton View Shelter & Tent Area is a primitive backcountry camping site located on the northwest side of Stratton Pond in Vermont's Green Mountain National Forest. The shelter sits along both the Appalachian National Scenic Trail and the Long Trail, which run together for 100 miles through southern Vermont. Completed in 2023, the shelter replaced an earlier structure removed in the 1990s and was built to address capacity issues at Stratton Pond, the busiest overnight site on the A.T. in Vermont. The site offers a three-sided shelter and adjacent tent area, with a composting toilet and access to water from the nearby pond or spring sources (all water must be treated or filtered before drinking). There is no potable water on site. Camping is restricted to designated sites only, and Leave No Trace principles are strictly enforced. Access is hike-in only via the Stratton Pond Trail or Lye Brook Trail, approximately 4.5 miles from the Arlington/West Wardsboro Road trailhead. All sites are first-come, first-served with no reservation system. As of 2023, there are no fees to stay at Long Trail overnight sites.

Directions

From Arlington/West Wardsboro Road, hike approximately 4.5 miles via the Stratton Pond Trail and Lye Brook Trail. The shelter is located on the northwest side of Stratton Pond, about 0.9 miles along the Lye Brook Trail from the pond.
