About

Grassy Creek Park occupies a scenic spot on John H. Kerr Reservoir, a 50,000-acre lake created by the John H. Kerr Dam in 1952. The reservoir extends 39 miles up the wooded, cove-studded shoreline of the Roanoke River across Virginia and North Carolina. As the only Army Corps campground on the North Carolina side of the lake, Grassy Creek provides a quieter alternative to the busier Virginia parks. The lake is widely known for its exceptional fishing, with abundant populations of largemouth bass, striped bass, crappie, flathead catfish, channel catfish, and blue catfish. The 800 miles of shoreline and 26 Wildlife Management Areas around the lake offer extensive opportunities for hiking, wildlife viewing, and birding. Game species in the area include whitetail deer, wild turkey, bobwhite quail, mourning dove, gray squirrel, cottontail rabbit, fox, raccoon, and resident waterfowl including wood duck, black duck, mallard, and Canadian geese. The park offers multiple shaded picnic areas perfect for enjoying views of the lake. Clarksville, Virginia is approximately 10 minutes away by highway and offers shopping, gas, and groceries. Clarksville Marina is about 15 minutes away by road or 30 minutes by water. The facility is unstaffed, with support provided by the main John H. Kerr office.
