About

Indian Mounds Recreation Area sits on the 185,000-acre Toledo Bend Reservoir within Sabine National Forest in deep East Texas. Managed by the Sabine River Authority of Texas under a special use permit, this primitive campground provides direct access to excellent fishing and boating opportunities on one of the largest man-made lakes in the South. The campground is open year-round on a first-come, first-served basis. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire ring, but there are no toilets or potable water on site, so campers must be fully self-sufficient. A short trail leads to the Indian mounds that give the area its name. Hunting for waterfowl on the reservoir and deer and squirrel in surrounding forest lands is also popular. Boat ramps provide easy reservoir access for motorized watercraft. The remote, undeveloped character makes this a good choice for campers seeking solitude and a back-to-basics experience on the water.
