About

Dry Soda Lookout is a historic fire lookout tower in the Malheur National Forest, constructed in 1941 and still actively staffed during fire season. The 50-foot tower features an L4 cab and sits at 5,593 feet elevation in Grant County, Oregon. Unlike other lookouts in the Malheur National Forest that have been converted to rental cabins, Dry Soda remains an operational fire detection station and is not available for public overnight use. The USFS designates it as a "future use not existing recreation site," indicating potential future conversion but no current public access for camping. The lookout is unusually accessible, located directly along Forest Road 3925 rather than at the end of a remote spur road. The surrounding landscape bears the marks of the 2015 Canyon Creek Fire, which burned much of the area.

Directions

From Seneca, OR: Take US 395 north for 7 miles, then turn right (east) on Forest Road 3925 for approximately 8.5 miles. The lookout sits directly along the road.
