About

Hunts Campground at Sweet Run State Park represents Virginia's commitment to expanding primitive camping opportunities in the northern region. Located on 884 acres along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this hike-in campground is currently in development as part of Virginia's 42nd and newest state park, which opened in 2023. The park itself features 11 miles of hiking trails and 9 miles of equestrian trails that wind along Sweet Run and Piney Run streams, through mature forests, meadows, and mountain-side terrain. The property is steeped in history, with visible ruins of a 19th-century farming community known as the "Waters" settlement, including stone walls, road beds, earthen dams, and charcoal hearths from the area's pre-Civil War past. The restored Demory-Wortman House, built in the 1840s, serves as the park office. While the campground awaits completion, day-use visitors can enjoy hiking, fishing at Gordon Pond (approximately 1 mile hike-in), and exploring the historic landscape. The park is open from 8 a.m. to dusk daily, located just four miles from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, with easy access to the Appalachian Trail and other regional attractions.

Directions

From Route 7 west of Leesburg, take Route 9W (Charles Town Pike) for 10 miles, then bear right onto Harpers Ferry Road (SR-671). Travel 5.6 miles and turn left into the park. From US-340, turn onto Harpers Ferry Road (SR-671) and travel 2 miles, then turn right into the park. Park entrance is at 11661 Harpers Ferry Road, Hillsboro, VA 20132.
