Safety, caution urged during hunting season

With hunting season underway, the National Forests in Mississippi is reminding all forest visitors to exercise caution and safety when visiting a national forest. Hunting is a safe, recreational sport. Some visitors, however, are sometimes surprised when they meet hunters on the forest.

Forest Closure Orders

The following are summaries of prohibited acts on the National Forests in Mississippi. A copy of each of the Forest Supervisor's Orders can be obtained from the Supervisor's Office in Jackson or any one of the six Ranger District Offices.

De Soto Rec Areas close as severe weather approaches

Hunt Camp 80A is a primitive camping site located within the Delta National Forest in Sharkey County, Mississippi. The Delta National Forest lies in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley and is surrounded by bayous, rivers, and lakes, featuring relatively flat terrain with majestic Bald Cypress trees and bottomland hardwoods. This campsite is one of 57 primitive sites dispersed throughout the forest. The campsite provides basic amenities including a graveled parking pad, fire ring, lantern post, and picnic table. No water, restrooms, or other services are available on-site, though potable water can be obtained at the Delta Work Center on Forest Service Road 703. The forest is cooperatively managed as the Sunflower Wildlife Management Area through an agreement with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. The Delta National Forest offers excellent opportunities for hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, hiking, ATV riding, horseback riding, and paddling. The area is particularly notable for migratory bird watching in spring and fall, as well as butterfly viewing during summer months. During hunting season, camping is permitted only at designated hunter camps like this one within the Sunflower WMA.
