About

Delta National Forest glimmers like a great green jewel in western Mississippi's Sharkey County, surrounded by lazy rivers and spreading agricultural fields. As the only entirely bottomland hardwood ecosystem in the National Forest System, this 60,898-acre forest offers a unique camping experience within seasonally flooded timber, majestic Bald Cypress groves, and small sloughs draining into the Big and Little Sunflower Rivers. The forest features 57 primitive campsites dispersed throughout designated areas. Each campsite includes a graveled pad, fire ring, lantern post, and picnic table. Camping is only permitted at designated campsites. Potable water is available at the Delta Work Center on Forest Service Road 703, but no water or restrooms are available at individual campsites. The terrain is relatively flat, characteristic of the Mississippi Alluvial Valley, and provides an immersive bottomland hardwood forest experience. Operating as the Sunflower Wildlife Management Area, the forest offers excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing, bird and butterfly watching, hiking, ATV riding on designated trails (with required permits), horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking, hunting, and fishing. The area is surrounded by bayous, rivers, and lakes, with nearby attractions including Highway 61 and the Mississippi Blues Trail, the Mississippi Mound Trail, and Vicksburg Military Park within an hour's drive. No alcohol is allowed on Wildlife Management Areas per Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks regulations. ATVs are not allowed off trailers at campsites and require daily or annual permits available at fee stations or the Delta Ranger District office.
