Horseshoe Lake-Madison State Park Campground
The campground is currently closed due to a causeway installation project. No access to Chouteau Island until approximately October 1, 2026, due to bridge repair. The road leading to the campground, picnic shelter #3, and hiking trail are also closed during construction.

About
Horseshoe Lake State Park occupies 2,960 acres of Mississippi River floodplain in Madison County, centered on a shallow oxbow lake created when the river cut off an old channel section. The lake averages just 3 feet deep due to millennia of silt accumulation. The campground offers 26 primitive sites suitable for tents or trailers, operating seasonally from May 1 through September 30. The park holds significant archaeological importance with evidence of continuous human habitation from the Archaic Period (8000 B.C.) through the Woodland period. The region once supported the Cahokia metropolis of 30,000-40,000 mound builders, and an earthen platform mound remains within park boundaries. Beyond camping, the park offers fishing, boating, hiking trails, picnicking, and hunting opportunities. Campers should note this is a primitive facility with no electric hookups or showers. Sites are first-come, first-served with a maximum stay of 7 days per 30-day period. Group camping reservations are available through the ExploreMoreIL website.
