About
Located along the winding Meramec River in St. Louis County, Castlewood State Park features two reservable picnic shelters ideal for family reunions, company picnics, and group gatherings. Shelter 1 accommodates up to 100 people, while Shelter 2 seats 70. Each shelter is equipped with a 4-foot by 4-foot barbecue grill, water fountain, and adjacent restroom facilities, with open areas suitable for volleyball, soccer, softball, and other group activities. The park spans 1,818 acres straddling both sides of the Meramec River and is considered one of the best mountain biking destinations in the St. Louis area. More than 30 miles of trails range from beginner-friendly paths to challenging routes for experienced riders and hikers. Equestrian trails are also available. Anglers can fish for bluegill, largemouth bass, and catfish from the riverbanks. The park includes a playground and 50 additional picnic sites available on a first-come, first-served basis. Originally a popular retreat for St. Louis residents in the early 1900s, the area has transformed from dance clubs and resorts into a natural oasis. The park offers broad meadows, abundant wildlife viewing opportunities, and scenic river valley vistas, making it a favorite destination for both adventure seekers and those looking for a peaceful day outdoors.
