Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial Sp Shelters

About

Dr. Edmund A. Babler Memorial State Park, located in Wildwood just west of St. Louis, offers four distinct picnic shelters ideal for family gatherings and special events. Three open shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s provide rustic charm with stone construction and wood trim. Cochran Shelter accommodates approximately 70 people with a fireplace, Walnut Grove holds up to 56 people with a barbecue grill, and Alta Shelter is the largest at 130-person capacity with three fireplaces and two barbecue grills. All open shelters include picnic tables with nearby water and restroom facilities but no electricity. The Henry Babler Enclosed Shelter offers a more modern option with two rooms accommodating up to 60 people total. This building features heating and air conditioning, tables, chairs, refrigerator, electrical outlets, counter space, ADA-accessible restrooms, and ample parking. The 2,441-acre park provides a scenic backdrop with over 200 additional picnic sites scattered throughout, plus hiking, bicycling, and equestrian trails for visitors to explore.

Directions

From I-44, take Exit 264 onto Hwy. 109. Travel north eight miles to Route BA. Turn left and continue two miles; the park entrance is on the left.
