About
Salmon Lake Cabin offers a unique wilderness lodging experience on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. This historic 15' x 20' single-story cabin is built entirely of cedar and features hand hewn beams, wooden door hinges, and a shake floor. Located on the northern shore of Salmon Lake within the Karta River Wilderness area, the cabin sleeps up to four people on wooden bunkbeds and is equipped with a table, benches, wood stove for heat, cooking counter, shelves, and basic tools. The cabin provides excellent fishing opportunities for rainbow and cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, pink, silver, and sockeye salmon from the forested shoreline and sandy beach. An aluminum skiff with oars is available for exploring the lake. The 5-mile Karta River Trail from Karta Bay provides hiking access to the river system, with opportunities to see steelhead, sockeye, and coho salmon runs. Swimming and beachcombing are popular during warmer months. The Karta River Wilderness is known for its large salmon runs and scenic river drainage system. Wildlife is abundant, including wolves, black bears, Sitka black-tailed deer, beavers, otters, minks, martens, weasels, and trumpeter swans. Access requires either a float plane (approximately 42 air miles from Ketchikan) or boating 10 miles from Hollis to Karta Bay followed by a 5-mile hike on difficult terrain. Winter access can be challenging as the lake may freeze, making float plane landings impossible. Guests must bring their own sleeping bags, cooking equipment, food, water, and other supplies.
Directions
Accessible by float plane approximately 42 air miles from Ketchikan and 14 air miles from Thorne Bay, or by boating 10 miles from Hollis to Karta Bay and hiking 5 miles on difficult terrain. Float plane access may be impossible when the lake is frozen. Refer to USGS maps Craig C-2 and C-3.
