About
Holcut Picnic Shelter serves as a day-use recreation area along the Divide Section of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway in northeastern Mississippi. Located off Highway 25 north of the town of Tishomingo, this unstaffed facility provides a scenic spot for picnicking and wildlife viewing along one of the nation's most significant engineering achievements.
The shelter features one large covered pavilion containing 8 picnic tables and 8 large grills, making it suitable for group gatherings and family outings. Trash bins are provided, and a restroom facility is located nearby. The site operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations required for the picnic area.
The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, often called the Tenn-Tom, extends 234 miles from the Tennessee River to the Tombigbee River in Alabama, connecting the nation's midsection to the Gulf of Mexico. As the largest earth-moving project in history, the waterway created 180,000 acres of public land offering diverse recreational opportunities. Near the picnic shelter, visitors can view the Holcut Historical Marker, which honors the former community of Holcut and its residents who sacrificed their town for the waterway's construction. The nearby Divide Section Wildlife Management Area provides additional opportunities for outdoor recreation.
