About

Twogood Cabin offers a unique backcountry experience in the southern Bitterroot Mountains. Built in 1952 by Harry Twogood and Clifford Wetzsteon, this former range camp served as a working cattle operation through the 1970s before opening to public recreation. The 15x19-foot log cabin features a concrete floor, covered porch, two large bunk beds accommodating up to 8 people, wood stove for heating, propane cooking stove, lanterns, basic cooking utensils, and a table with chairs. The cabin sits along Porcupine Creek in a roadless wilderness area at 5,600 feet elevation. Access requires a 6-mile hike from the Warm Springs Creek Trailhead, following the creek through rolling meadows and crossing several streams. The trail is open to hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking, but off-road vehicles are prohibited. Three hitchrails near the cabin accommodate up to 12 head of stock, though grazing within one mile is prohibited and certified weed-free feed is required. Porcupine Creek provides the sole water source and must be filtered or boiled before consumption. Fishing is excellent in multiple nearby streams for cutthroat and other trout species. The surrounding area serves as winter elk range and provides habitat for moose, deer, black bear, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, and mountain goats. In winter, the trail becomes popular for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, though access to the trailhead may require additional winter travel methods when roads are snow-covered.

Directions

From Missoula, travel south on Highway 93 for approximately 36 miles south of Hamilton to Medicine Creek Road/Forest Service Road 370. Turn right and continue about 4 miles to the trailhead at Crazy Creek Campground. Hike 6 miles along Trail 103 following Warm Springs Creek to Three Forks, then one mile up Porcupine Creek to the cabin. Winter access may require skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling to reach the trailhead.
