About
Twogood Cabin offers a true backcountry experience in western Montana's Bitterroot National Forest. Built in 1952 by Harry Twogood and Clifford Wetzsteon, the cabin served as a range camp until opening to public recreation. The 15x19 foot log structure sits on Porcupine Creek at approximately 5,600 feet elevation, surrounded by rolling meadows that serve as winter elk range. The cabin sleeps up to 8 on two large bunk beds (no mattresses or bedding provided). Amenities include a wood stove for heat, a two-burner propane cook stove (bring your own 1-quart propane bottles), propane lanterns, basic pots/pans/utensils, a cooler, and a table with 4 chairs. A vault toilet serves the cabin but guests must bring toilet paper. Porcupine Creek provides water but must be filtered or boiled due to beaver dams upstream. Access requires a 6-mile hike from the Warm Springs Creek Trailhead at Crazy Creek Campground. The trail follows Warm Springs Creek to Three Forks, then continues a mile up Porcupine Creek. Horses and mountain bikes are permitted; ATVs are prohibited. Fishing for cutthroat trout is excellent in nearby streams. Three hitchrails accommodate up to 12 head of stock; grazing within one mile is prohibited and feed must be certified weed-free.
Directions
From Sula, MT, travel northwest 2.9 miles on Highway 93. Turn west onto Medicine Springs Road (FR 370) and drive 4.5 miles to the Warm Springs Creek Trailhead at Crazy Creek Campground. From there, hike 6 miles along Warm Springs Creek to Three Forks, then continue one mile up Porcupine Creek to the cabin. The trail includes several creek crossings. Open to hiking, horseback riding, mountain bikes, and motorcycles; ATVs prohibited.
